Obama: Energy Costs Should Skyrocket

Hot Air brings our attention to a little tidbit in an interview Obama gave with the San Francisco Chronicle in January.  Obama wants you to pay significantly more for energy.

You know, when I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, uh, you know — Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, uh, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.

Obama wants the builders of coal plants to be led into bankruptcy, and he wants to use government regulation to ensure this bankruptcy.  Some questions from Chicago Boyz:

1)Would he also bankrupt those who already operate coal-fired plants, which produce about 40% of the nation’s electricity? Presumably, yes, although he might give them a few years’ grace period.

2)Would he also charge carbon taxes on coal *exports*? For one who believes that CO2-based global warming is among the most critical world issues, it would be irrational to suppress the use of coal at home while still permitting its transfer abroad. Expect the carbon fees to eventually be applied at the mine mouth, not just the point of use.

3)What about the integrated steel companies, which use coke (made from coal) in their blast furnaces? Does he want to bankrupt them, too?

No Quarter highlight some of those states whose economies are particularly based on coal technologies, states like Wyoming, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Texas, Montana, Illinois, Virginia, North Dakota, Colorado, Indiana, New Mexico, Utah, Ohio, Alabama and Arizona.

Nuclear energy generates about 20% of US energy, but Obama, and the Democrats, are not very big fans of that, either.

Energy is a very serious issue, and it warrants a serious discussion.  Is this discussion likely to take place when far-left Democrats hold unchecked power in the federal government?  This Obama-style cap-and-trade policy will be the equivalent of a massive tax (one that skyrockets the cost of heating your home, driving your car, buying lots of products).  Remember, this skyrocketing is not incidental to this Democrat energy plan: it’s a central feature.  Do you want your energy costs to skyrocket right now?  Does your sister/uncle/best friend in a swing state want that?

There are ways to put the brakes on and work towards a real bipartisan discussion.
